Synopsis

The hostel accommodation sector is broad, varied and going through a revolution. With a focus on major cities, new players are entering key markets and challenging established operators. The lines between hostel and hotel are blurring with the latest developments offering a range of accommodation options to meet every taste and budget – boutique hotel rooms, dorms, apartments – you name it!

Youth travel and the demand for suitable accommodation seems set for continued growth. Against this backdrop investments are being made and a number of brands are emerging in the hostel space.

Does their arrival mean the end of the traditional owner: operator hostel? What value does the brand bring to the (millennial) customer? How are and how might these brands reshape the hostel market? Does the evolution to brands match what has happened in the hotel space?

This discussion session with a panel of industry experts will examine the current investment climate in some key European markets. Insights into the latest hostel developments and customers will be revealed. Ultimately, the customer chooses where to stay: the discussion will also consider who “owns” the customer relationship and how are the stakeholders organising themselves to compete in an ever more crowded and transparent marketplace.
