New hostel network in Australia
A new independent hostel network is to be launched in Australia this week.
Hostels Australia is a collective of the best independent backpacker accommodation providers across Australia, with the needs of the hostel operators at the very core of the operation. The network will encourage direct non-commissionable bookings through the sale of a Hostels Australia card to travellers.
Twenty of Australia’s leading hostels have already signed on, including Bounce Sydney, WakeUp! Sydney, Gilligan’s in Cairns, and United Backpackers in Melbourne. The consumer website, www.hostelsaustralia.com.au will provide a Google maps driven application that will highlight the network hostels in any given city. The site will also provide valuable local information ranging from transport information and supermarket locations, to Wi-Fi hotspots and the best food deals and drinking venues.
Scott Ryan, co-founder of Hostels Australia, sees the network as an obvious next step in the Australian hostel industry. “A network with Australia’s best hostels has been discussed for years, with many of the key operators already having informal referral arrangements in place. We are thrilled to come together and create a formalised network recognising the best properties and independent operators in each city.”
While hostels will pay to participate in the network, the monthly costs of participation will be off-set against the dollar amount of membership cards sold, with the potential for cost neutral participation. Hostels Australia will run domestic and international marketing campaigns to promote direct bookings, and will send a travel blogger to all properties featured in the network.
The launch will occur later this week and for the first month it will be free for all hostels and travellers. Over 10,000 Hostels Australia cards will be distributed to hostels, travel stores and industry partners to get the network up and running.
