Nomads Backpackers and the Bunning Family Private Trust have taken over ownership of the Base Backpackers group.Merger snip

The Base Backpacker network, which started with its first hostel in 1987, is a network of over 31 hostels across Australia and New Zealand, including award winning hostels Base Melbourne and Base Magnetic Island.

The new owners, Nomads, also started with a single hostel in 1994, expanding to become a representative company for some 40 hostels across Australia, with hostel operations now in over 20 countries.

Since the early-mid 2000s, Nomads has been owned and run by Michael Ebert, long term Nomads General Manager, and Daniel Bunning, former Perth developer. The business has expanded beyond the hostel market to include a variety of brands covering hostels and budget accommodation, a wholesale travel agency and retail travel arm, a job service for working holiday backpackers, and adventure experience companies including Mad Travel Shop, Nomads Fraser Island 4WD tours, and a partnership in the Mojo Surf and Snow business.

The merger will result in one of the largest independent hostel networks in the Australia – New Zealand market, with over 70 hostels. Nomads have indicated that both brands will be retained, along with the important and valued relationships associated with each company.
