Profile of the global youth accommodation Industry 2007

Coming in 2008…
Study of business metrics for youth accommodation providers 2008

Key trends revealed by STAY WYSE for 2007:

“Our research indicates that hostels are expanding in number and size, becoming increasingly professional with more customised facilities, especially for the expanding flashpacker travel markets”
Peter Anwyl, STAY WYSE Chairperson

“Flashpackers” - backpackers with bigger budgets
Many hostels are upgrading their facilities, reducing room sizes and focusing on larger sites with a stronger city presence in order to appeal to the lucrative ‘flashpacker’ market of backpackers with bigger budgets

A connected market
Young people are increasingly booking and reviewing hostel accommodation using Web 2.0 technology, which is helping to improve the standard and profitability of youth hostels worldwide. By positioning hostels alongside budget hotels, these reservation websites are also blurring the boundaries between both markets.

An Expanding Network
The global network of independent hostels is expanding rapidly. Approximately 15,000 independent hostels (Travel fat 2005) now account for two thirds of all hostels worldwide. Campsites and budget hotels are also major suppliers of youth accommodation particularly in North America, Australasia and Europe.

A Valuable Global Market
The youth accommodation industry is experiencing phenomenal growth with an increase in value forecast from US$ 7.4 billion in 2005 to approximately US$12 billion in 2020.
