Stayokay reopens renovated location in the heart of Amsterdam

Feb 18, 2025

Stayokay has reopened its Amsterdam Stadsdoelen hostel following a complete renovation of the historic building, which dates back to 1730.

Stayokay, formerly NJHC: Nederlandse Jeugdherberg Centrale, has been located in the building since 1939. The hostel now runs entirely without natural gas, offering guests a unique combination of historic charm and modern facilities in the bustling city center.

Sustainable renovation with respect for history
The renovation of Stayokay Amsterdam Stadsdoelen was carried out with respect for the monumental status of the building. Thanks to smart and innovative solutions, such as insulation on the inside of the walls, HR+++ glass and Fineo monument glass, 64 solar panels on the roof, heat pumps and underfloor heating, the building has been modernised without compromising its historical value.

Joris van Nistelrooij, property manager and director of NJHC:

“If a centuries-old building can be sustainable, it can be done anywhere. Our collaboration with De Groene Grachten has helped us to make even a complex building like this gas-free. The monumental status and unique building structure required customisation, but the result is an inspiring example of how modernity and history can go hand in hand.”

Marijke Schreiner, Managing Director at Stayokay, adds:

“Sustainability is in Stayokay’s DNA. This renovation shows that we are not only looking at how we can reduce our impact, but also how we can inspire guests to make conscious choices during their stay.”

Green renovation
The process started with a cultural-historical valuation of the building, in which it was carefully determined which elements had to be preserved. Based on this analysis, sustainability measures have been developed that make a maximum contribution to energy and CO2 savings. The sustainability emphasises that environmentally.conscious choices are also possible in buildings with a rich history.

The renovation is in line with Stayokay’s goal to put sustainability at the heart of all its hostels, and make a positive impact on both guests and the environment.
