Swiss Youth Hostels celebrates reopening of Bijou Youth Hostel
Swiss Youth Hostels is celebrating a new opening: The Martigny Youth Hostel which has been welcoming guests since the end of February 2025. Housed within historic walls, the hostel located in the historic Bâtiment de l’Horloge is the ideal accommodation for culinary, culture, and nature enthusiasts who want to explore the region on their own, with their family, or in a small group at an affordable price.
A new addition to the Swiss Youth Hostels network
After a two-year renovation, the hostel now offers 48 beds in double, family, four-bed, and six-bed rooms—all with private bathrooms. “This strengthens our presence in this attractive Swiss tourism region,” says Janine Bunte, CEO of Swiss Youth Hostels. Facilities include cosy lounges, a playroom, a bike/ski storage, and a vaulted breakfast cellar. While not fully accessible, key areas like the breakfast room and one bedroom are wheelchair-friendly. Open until October and from late November to early April, it expects 4,500 overnight stays in its first year.
Strong partnerships
Swiss Youth Hostels realised the project with Martigny, a cultural hub with 117, 000 annual overnight stays. Architect Nicolas Coutaz led the transformation of the 1645-built house. The late philanthropist Léonard Gianadda and his foundation funded the CHF 4 million renovation. “His vision for a youth hostel in his hometown lives on,” says Caty Darbellay of the foundation.
Adventure and Culture on the Doorstep
Located in Martigny-Bourg’s lively quarter, the hostel is ideal for exploring vineyards, hiking trails, and ski areas like Verbier 4Vallées. Culture lovers can visit Fondation Pierre Gianadda, Barryland’s Saint Bernard museum, and Martigny’s Roman amphitheatre.
