MEININGER Hotels steps into Spain’s budget hotel boom, taking on industry giants

Dec 3, 2025

MEININGER Hotels is stepping firmly into Spain’s booming low-cost hotel market, joining major players like Accor, B&B and Travelodge as rising room rates push investors toward budget concepts. With average overnight prices reaching EUR 170 in Spain in September 2025, travellers are increasingly seeking affordable alternatives, prompting hotel groups and investment funds to accelerate their expansion in the budget segment.

Against this backdrop, MEININGER Hotels has strengthened its presence in Spain with the announcement of a new 193-room, 700-bed property in Madrid, scheduled to open in early 2028 next to Retiro Park. This follows its debut in Barcelona, set to open in July 2026, reinforcing the group’s strategic move into key Spanish cities. Looking ahead, MEININGER Hotels sees significant potential across Spain, with target cities including Málaga, Seville, Valencia, Bilbao and Granada.

The company currently operates 36 hotels in Europe, with nine more under development. Its pipeline includes new properties in Edinburgh, Strasbourg and Tel Aviv, as well as further expansion in Southern and Eastern Europe, the Nordic countries and the UK. With a strong long-term lease model and a forward-looking development strategy, MEININGER aims to reach around 50 hotels in the coming years, solidifying its position as a major player in Europe’s evolving low-cost hospitality landscape.
