Drifter unveils next-generation dream pods as part of major Melbourne renovation

Design-led hybrid hotel brand Drifter has announced the introduction of its next-generation Drifter Dream Pods, launching as part of a multi-million-dollar renovation of Drifter Melbourne, currently underway and set for completion later this year.

The extensive redevelopment marks the next major chapter for the brand’s Melbourne venue, which will emerge as one of Drifter’s largest and most ambitious properties to date. Located in the heart of the CBD at 167 Franklin Street, Drifter Melbourne will feature approximately 800 beds across more than 100 keys, combining private rooms, shared suites and 96 custom-designed Dream Pods, with pod stays starting from USD 65 per night.

Trans-Tasman studio CTRL Space – who also designed Drifter Christchurch – is behind the design of Drifter Melbourne project, and also the design of the Dream Pods which deliver 30% more space than a traditional bunk, redefining comfort and privacy within a social, design-led hotel-hostel environment.

Each pod has been purpose-built for modern travellers and features integrated secure storage, a dedicated clothes rack, ambient and task lighting, and multiple charging ports, creating a self-contained personal retreat that is both practical and considered. Thoughtful spatial planning allows guests to unpack, settle in and properly switch off, without compromising the communal energy that defines the Drifter experience.

The Dream Pods are housed within spacious, light-filled shared rooms, complemented by multiple ensuite bathrooms and personal lockers for every guest. The result is a highly functional hybrid accommodation model that balances vibrant social connection with a genuinely good night’s sleep.

Over the past year we’ve seen a 150% increase in group travel bookings taking entire shared rooms, and the Dream Pods are perfectly positioned to meet that demand.”

Beyond accommodation, the renovation will introduce expansive social lounges, co-working spaces, gym and wellness facilities, Rambler Public Bar, and a full cultural program of music, art and community events. Design cues throughout the property will draw on Melbourne’s iconic laneway culture, creative subcultures and layered urban textures, reinforcing Drifter’s positioning as a social and cultural hub as much as a place to stay.

Drifter Dream Pods at Drifter Melbourne are available to book and stay in now, ahead of the full property relaunch later this year. Drifter Melbourne continues to operate through the renovation period.
